Orthodontics comes from the Greek words, “Orthos” which means correct or straight and “Odontes” which means teeth. It was the first speciality of dentistry to be established.
Orthodontics is the specialist area of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of dental and facial irregularities occurring in children and adults. It deals primarily with straightening teeth and correcting how they meet. It is also concerned with the growth and development of the teeth, jaws, and face.
Orthodontic treatment aims to straighten irregular teeth, correct problems with the bite, enhance facial appearance and of course create a great smile.
Common problems treated include:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Spaced teeth
- Teeth which stick out
- Missing or extra teeth
- Impacted (stuck) teeth
- An overbite
- An underbite
- Misaligned or incorrect jaw position, resulting in a bad bite.
